Winthrop Drama Society Kicks off First Show of the School Year

The Drama Society will be donning 1930s attire on Thursday evening as they hit the stage in their first performance of “Anything Goes.” Described by cast members as flashy, over-the-top, and bright, “Anything Goes” is set aboard the S.S. American and showcases charming Wall Street associate, Billy Crocker played by Daniel Tracy. Crocker’s main goal is to be near his love, Hope Harcourt, played by Heather Buccini. As the cast tap dances their way through the many twists and turns of the plot, audience members will be enthralled as they watch Billy vie for Hope’s heart.

“There are a lot of fun duets in this show,” said Fiona MacPhail, who plays the role of Reno Sweeney. “I’m excited for everything to come together.”

When asked what they are most excited about, the cast members agree that the tap-dancing and choreography is a lot of fun and different than prior performances. Over the summer, Jaime Montesano, from the Winthrop School of Performing Arts, taught the cast how to tap.

In addition to the uplifting dance choreography, the show will present some flashy costume changes.

“This show has so many costumes, it has been a bit hectic, but it’s probably going to be one of the most rewarding shows that I’ve done so far,” said Costume Designer, Zara Powell. “There are over six costume changes for some of the principle characters, which gives every one of them a very distinctive and interesting feel in this show, and I think everyone who comes to see it will enjoy it.”

After 35 rehearsals, the cast is ready to board their 1930s set on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at 7 p.m., and Saturday at 2 p.m. (Nov. 21, 22, and 23), at the Neil Shapiro Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at: www.winthropdrama.com.
