Middle School Brings Back Cross Country Track, First Season a Success

This year was the first time in a long time that the Winthrop Middle School had a Cross Country Track team, and so far, the program is proving to be a success. Last Wednesday, the team of 53 athletes, celebrated the end of their first season. After competing in seven dual meets, three which were at home at Deer Island, and four on the road, the team had a lot to celebrate. On October 30th, WMS participated in the Northeast Conference Meet, competing against seven other schools, and placing high amongst their peers. Seventh-grader, April Ferguson came in the top 12 in the female division, out of 177 racers, and sixth grader Noah Bayersdorfer placed 12th out of 211 in the male division.

“Each and every one of you made this season successful,” said Coach Mike Kirby. “I’m hoping you all realize how much you improved over the season.”

After years of having no middle school track team, the co-ed cross country team was launched with the combined efforts of the school committee, Principal Curley, Winthrop High School Athletic Director Matt Serino, Coach Adam Crombie, Coach Mike Kirby, and Extracurricular Activities Director, Vasili Mallios.  The team trained three days a week, with meets on Wednesdays. A co-ed spring Track and Field team is planned for the spring of 2020.
