Student Highlight: Katerina Thano Stays Local for College Choice

For Katerina Thano, it seemed like just yesterday she was meeting her lifelong friends on the kindergarten playground. In the blink of an eye, the years passed and Thano is already heading off to college in the fall. While some of her classmates are traveling far to get their education, Thano has decided to stay close by, and will be attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst to study Engineering at the Commonwealth Honors College. As she says goodbye to her many seasons of high school and middle school track, she is looking forward to the adventure that lies ahead.

Why did you choose engineering as your major?

I’ve always loved math and science, so engineering is a perfect field for me to pursue as a future career.

What other activities were you involved in while in high school?

Apart from sports, I was the president of the math club and the co-creator of the WHS STEM Club.

Any honors, awards?

I have received the President’s educational award for all four years of high school. I have also been a part of the National Honor Society for the past two years.

After school job or out of school activities?

For the past few years, I have worked at a place called Zumix as a youth sound technician. I also love playing guitar!

Who is your role model?

My role model(s) will definitely have to be my parents. They have encountered an endless number of struggles throughout their lives but have somehow always managed to put their kids first and provide the best opportunities possible. I will always be thankful for what they’ve done for me and wish that I could achieve half as much as they have.
