Winthrop Baseball vs Somerville Baseball Final Score 10 – 8 Vikings

Sid Albert laced a last-inning two-run triple, then scored on an error, to power Winthrop to a 10-8 win at Somerville Monday afternoon, May 6.

The Vikings took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when they took advantage of a pair of Somerville errors that put Dan Gillis and Ryan Skoczylas on base and who scored on back-to-back singles by Dave DiCicco and Jonathan Applebee.

The Vikings extended their lead to 4-0 with two more runs in the second.  Again, Somerville errors helped the Winthrop cause. Ryan Buccini led off and reached on an error and moved to second on a Miles Albert fielder’s choice.  Gillis then smacked a grounder to short that was bobbled and he beat the throw to put runners at first and third.  Gillis stole second, and he and Buccini scored on Bobby Hubert’s double.

Somerville answered with a run in their half of the second, but the Vikings matched it in the third when Sid Albert launched a double to right-center field that scored Christian Natareno, who had singled.

Somerville added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make it 5-3, and only a great defensive relay from centerfielder Applebee-to-Sid Albert-to catcher Miles Albert prevented another Somerville run as the trio combined to erase Somerville’s McDonald at home plate.

The Vikings added more offense in the fourth inning with a two-out rally as Skoczylas singled and scored on a DiCicco double, and an Applebee single scored DiCicco.

Somerville rallied, though, with three runs in the fourth and a pair in the fifth to take a lead into the final (7th) inning, setting the stage for Sid Albert’s heroics.
