Town of Winthrop Prevention Week Begins Monday May 13

The town and CASA will kick off National Prevention Week on May 13-17.

“Primary prevention is the focus and tackles the root causes and issues of problems. We need to stop them from developing in the first place,” said CASA (Community Action for Safe Alternatives) Leighann Eruzione executive director. “As the primary prevention coalition for the Winthrop community, CASA aims to help improve the quality of life.”

Recent data across the nation and in Winthrop shows an increase in depressive symptoms, anxiety and suicide.

On Monday, May 13 the community is invited to a free mental health training session called “Minding Your Mind” It will be held in the auditorium of the high/middle school from 6:30-8 p.m.

On Wednesday, May 15 there will be a mental health crisis training on stress, depression and anxiety. Presented by Deb Goldfarb, LICSW, and Winthrop Police Sgt. Sarko Gergerian. The group will meet from 4:30-6 p.m. in the CASA office in the EB Newton School on Pauline Street. Specialized training on how to handle situations for youths, Grades 8-12 will also be held.

On Thursday, May 16, from 6:30-8 p.m. CASA will meet on the second floor of the EB Newton for an Open House. Check out our space, have some cookies and coffee.
