Michael Goren
Great plumber, chef and always the perfect host
Michael B. Goren of Winthrop passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at Whidden Hospital/CHA, Everett on Sept. 27. He was 55 years old.
Michael was born May 24, 1963, the son of Cellia and Hyman Goren of Winthrop.
Michael was a lifelong resident of Winthrop where he attended school, was a Boy Scout and a quarterback at Winthrop High School. Michael loved to travel, went on many fishing and hunting trips with great friends and made many memories. Michael was a member for many years at the Winthrop Lodge of Elks and Beachmont Yacht Club. He loved to dance and volunteer in the kitchen.
Michael was a master plumber by trade encouraged by his father, Hyman. But we all know that Michael’s passion was cooking and entertaining his family and friends. Gatherings at the Goren residence pool included lots of laughs, food, and memories. Michael was a great plumber, chef and always the perfect Host!
He is survived by his cousins Marilyn and Robert Gillis of Methuen, Suzanne Strock, of Cape Neddick, Maine, Malcolm Glapp, of Concord, N.H. and companion, Erma Muniz, of Texas.
Michael never met a stranger he didn’t like and during his lifetime, had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He was loved beyond measure, and will be greatly missed and remembered.
A Celebration of Life for Michael will be held Friday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Winthrop Lodge of Elks, Fireside Room, Winthrop. Please bring pictures and stories about Michael that you would like to share.

Marybeth Spinali
Registered Nurse
Marybeth Spinali passed away at the Eastpointe Nursing Care Center in Chelsea on Oct. 15. She was 67 years old.
Born in Winthrop, she was the beloved daughter of the late Elizabeth (Lloyd) and Edward Doherty.
A longtime resident of Winthrop, she was employed as a registered nurse working in nursing homes in the area.
She was the loving mother of Joy Spinali of Everett and Hashia Wallace of St. John Virgin Islands, the dear sister of Stephen Doherty of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mark Doherty of Hull and Ann Marie Ciano of Revere, cherished grandmother of Alexandra, Jaina, Malcolm, Quinn, Ila June and Sahira and great-grandmother of Naviah. She is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

Bruce Johnson
Carpenter and member of the Winthrop and Pleasant Park Yacht Club
Bruce Johnson, a long-time resident of Winthrop, passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 9 at the age of 70.
Bruce worked in the construction industry as a carpenter. He was a member of both the Winthrop Yacht Club and the Pleasant Park Yacht Club, located in Winthrop.
Bruce leaves his wife, Eileen (Barry) Johnson, his sisters, Karen Johnson of Winthrop and Sharon Johnson and her husband, Eric of Bolton and his brother, John Johnson and his wife, Elaine of Windham, N.H.
Born in Newton, he was the son of the late Victoria (Piselli) Johnson and John Johnson. He also leaves many, many friends in Winthrop and beyond, and his cats Spooky and Queenie. Funeral arrangements were from the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St. Winthrop. A Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church on Friday, Oct. 12. John Pomeroy
Former Winthrop Golf Club member
John J. Pomeroy of Winthrop passed away on Oct. 14. He was 74 years old.
John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1962 to 1964. He was a former member of the Winthrop Golf Club and the former owner of U.S. Roofing Co. and the Good Harbor Beach Inn in Gloucester. Recently, John was employed as a security officer at Harvard University. It was here that John took on the role as a “mentor†to the students. He thoroughly enjoyed all of the interactions and conversations he had with the students at the university.
The beloved husband of Karen B. (Dickson) Pomeroy, he was born in Boston, he was the son of the late Francis C. and Katherine V. Pomeroy; devoted father of Sean T. Pomeroy and his wife, Jennifer of Tampa, Fla., the late Kristin L. Pomeroy, Adam Tucker and his wife, Carrie of Larchmont, N.Y. and Darren Tucker of Santa Monica, Calif.; adored grandfather of Armand Pomeroy, Celia DeVito-Pomeroy, Keira Pomeroy, Jacob, Lucas and Sadie Tucker and Lioba and Shel Tucker; dear brother of Francis X. Pomeroy of Winthrop, Mary Sliney of Centerville, Jean Marie of Peabody, Edward T. Pomeroy of Canton and Loretta Comeau of Reading. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visiting hours will be held in the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, 210 Winthrop St., Winthrop, today, Thursday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Marilyn Soper

Marilyn A. “Cookie†Soper of Lincoln St., Winthrop passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Oct. 14. She was 81 years old.
Born in Boston, the beloved daughter of the late Mary (Orlando) and Joseph Ciampa, she was a lifelong resident of Winthrop and a 1956 graduate of Winthrop High School. She went on to work as a telephone operator and a customer service agent for New England Telephone. She also worked as an Avon Lady and was a former member of the Winthrop Golf Club, as well as the Keno Lady at the Winthrop Lodge of Elks.
She was the loving mother of Jim Soper and his wife, Diane of Winthrop, Michael Soper and his wife, Debbie of Winthrop and the late Lisa Zagarella. She was the dear sister of the late Jack Ciampa,  the cherished grandmother of Michael Soper and his wife ,Jacquelyn, Meredith Soper and her fiancé, Craig Schlitter, Jennifer Hernandez and her husband, Rob and James Soper and his wife, Sara Soper-Stevens. She was also the loving companion of Pat Staff.
The funeral will be conducted from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Thursday, Oct. 18, at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Interment to follow the mass will be in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.
