Julia Duplin Recipient of David W. Davis Memorial Internship at Massport

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) yesterday announced the recipient of the annual David W. Davis Memorial Internship. The internship honors the memory of Dave Davis, the longest-serving executive director in the 53-year history of the Massachusetts Port Authority, leading Massport from 1975 until 1990.  The 13-week paid internship was awarded to Winthrop resident Julia Duplin.  Julia attends Stonehill College where she studies accounting and criminology.

“We are very pleased to award Julia with the David W. Davis Memorial Internship,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “Julia’s passion for helping others and providing opportunities for future generations is exactly what we were looking for when we created this internship in memory of our friend and colleague Dave Davis.”

During his tenure, Davis demonstrated a commitment to Massport’s neighbors as well as to its customers; Davis developed one of the very first residential soundproofing programs in the country. “Kidport” was another airport industry first that Davis unveiled at Boston Logan International Airport in 1987 as the nation’s first airport-based play area for children. It was also under Davis’s leadership that Massport established its own employee retirement system, which Davis later joined when Massport’s employees elected him to be their representative on the retirement board in 1996.

The David W. Davis Memorial Internship is awarded annually to an exceptional junior or senior in college. The internship allows students to develop a professional network that will aid them in their pursuit of a career in government and/or the public sector. In her essay, Julia says, “a career in public service not only consists of making a positive difference for the people, it can also open many doors for future generations and create real impacts on how communities and organizations can strive to be better.” Outside of school, Julia volunteers for My Brother’s Keeper, a Christian ministry that delivers furniture and food to families in need.

To be considered for the David W. Davis Memorial Internship, students are required to have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and submit an essay of 1,000 words describing why they believe a career in public service is essential to their career interests.
