WHS hockey team wins opener, 3-0

The Winthrop High boys hockey team opened its season in impressive fashion with a 3-0 victory at non-league rival Mansfield last Wednesday.

After a scoreless first period, freshman Joe Holgersen lit the lamp for the first Viking goal of the season, assisted by junior Chris Finn. Junior Sam Yarrow, assisted by junior Brian Chalmers and senior assistant captain Jake Adamson, made it 2-0.

Yarrow then potted his second goal of the contest, assisted by Mark Van Buskirk, to add some extra insurance.

Junior goal-keeper Ryan Skoczylas, a returning Northeastern Conference all-star, was immense in net, turning aside 31 shots to earn the shutout.

“Ryan was fabulous,” noted WHS assistant coach Mike Norris. “He was the difference-maker for us.”

Coach Dale Dunbar’s squad will be led this year by captains Tyler Mignosa and Henry Brooks and assistant captains Adamson, Steve Holgersen, and Tyler Marley.

The Vikings have a busy week ahead. They were set to host Saugus last night (Wednesday) and will trek to Peabody Saturday afternoon for a 4:00 face-off.

They then will play in the Kasabuski Hockey Tournament on the days after Christmas, taking on North Reading in the tourney opener at 10:00 on Tuesday and meeting the winner of Melrose vs. Triton the following day.

 

Lady Viking hockey team opens with win, tie

The Winthrop High girls hockey team opened its season in impressive fashion with a win and a tie this past week.

The Lady Vikings handily defeated Peabody this past Saturday, 5-2, at Larsen Rink.

After a scoreless first period, eighth-grader Sophia Kennedy lit the lamp, assisted by Ashley Miles, to break the scoreless deadlock. Freshman Gemma DiMento, assisted by McKayla Norris and Kennedy, made it 2-0 and McKayla, assisted by DiMento, upped the Winthrop lead to 3-0.

Kennedy notched her second goal of the contest with an unassisted marker before Peabody sliced the lead to 4-1. Catie O’Shea got that one back for Winthrop to make it 5-1.

The big Lady Viking advantage enabled WHS head coach Anthony Martucci to give all of his players some valuable ice time to complete the contest.

Eighth-grade goalie Summer Tallent went all the way between the pipes for Winthrop.

The Lady Vikings host Central Catholic Saturday afternoon at Larsen at 1:30 and will entertain Cambridge on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

 

WHS track teams compete vs. Medford

The Winthrop High girls and boys indoor track and field teams took on Medford last week at the Revere High field house. Although both squads came up on the short end of their meets, there were some notable performances by the Vikings.

On the boys’ side, Cormac MacPhail handily won the one-mile event with a time of 5:08.4, which was 15 seconds faster than his closest Medford competitor.

Five Vikings earned three points for their team with second place finishes: Kim Haddar with a high jump of 5 feet-0 inches; Pat Teixeira with a shot put toss of 33 feet-2 inches; Cody Wojcik in the hurdles in 9.9; Rodrigo Freitas with a clocking of 3:23.5 in the 1,000; and Pat Haskell in the two-mile with a run of 12:36.

Adding single points to the Winthrop side of the scoresheet with third-place finishes were: Bobby Hubert in the dash in 6.1; Andrew Love in the hurdles in 10.1 and the high jump with a leap of 5 feet-0 inches; and A.J. Massa in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet-7 inches.

The Winthrop boys also captured the 4 x 100 relay when Medford was disqualified. The final tally showed Winthrop with 29 points and Medford with 54.

For the Lady Vikings, Mary Kate Pote and Danielle Zanelli were winners in their respective events. Mary Kate captured the shot with a throw of 27 feet-3 inches and Danielle won the hurdles in 8.6.

Second place finishers for the Winthrop girls were: Kim McDuffee in the high jump with her leap of 4 feet-6 inches; Xhona Kokoneshi in the shot with her toss of 22 feet-6 inches; Isabela Mahoney in the dash in 6.9; Gabby Hinchion in the mile in 7:01.9; and Camilla Miranda-Llovera in the two-mile in 13:24.

Adding points to the Winthrop tally with third-place finishes were: Gabrielle Ford in the 1,000 in 4:13.1; Isabel Skomro in the mile in 7:20; and Amyra Silva in the two-mile in 15:33.

Medford won the meet, 58-28.

Both the boys and girls squads were set to travel to Somerville this past Tuesday in their final dual-meet before the holiday break.

 

WHS basketball teams bounce into action

The Winthrop high boys and girls basketball team swung into action to begin their 2017-18 seasons this past week.

The Vikings, under the direction of new head coach Dave Sacco, opened their campaign with an 80-65 victory over non-league foe Malden Catholic last Tuesday. The Vikings then fell to Northeastern Conference rival Beverly, 79-46, this past Friday.

Winthrop was set to travel to Lynn Classical this past Tuesday and will host Lynn English this evening (Thursday) at the WHS gym.

The Lady Vikings opened their season with a 57-29 loss at Beverly. The Winthrop girls hosted Lynn Classical this past Tuesday and will travel to Lynn English this evening (Thursday).

Both teams will compete in the Pope John XXIII holiday tourney next week.
