Election Season Begins Races Are off to a Slow Start

By Sue Ellen Woodcock

There was no crowd of people jamming into the Town Clerk’s office on Monday, but it was the day that marked the beginning of when candidates for local office can take out nomination papers.

At press time only incumbent Robert Driscoll had taken out papers for Town Council President. Jim Fabiano has taken out papers for a seat on the School Committee and incumbent Gillian Teixeira has taken out papers for Library Trustee.

There are several races to watch for the Nov. 7 election. Incumbents in their Ward races include Paul Varone, Precinct 1; Nicholas DelVento, Precinct 3 and Russ Sanford, Precinct 5.

Councilor-at-large Rich Boyajian is also up for re-election, as are Betty Peabody and Virginia Wallace for Library Trustee.

On the School Committee there are three up for re-election, Dawn Sullivan, Brian Perrin and William Holden.

On the Winthrop Housing Authority there are two seats up for re-election held by Lawrence Holmes and Peter Gill.

The last day to return nomination papers is Sept. 19. On Oct. 5 the lottery will be held for ballot position. The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 7 election is Oct. 18.
