There were a lot of tears shed on Saturday evening when the Winthrop High School drama club accepted their well-deserved state championship trophy at the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild Competition.

The last time the drama club won this prestigious award was in 2001 for the production of Bread and Roses, directed by Neil Shapiro.

“I am so incredibly proud of the cast and crew of Antigone,” said drama teacher Karen Calinda. “They worked so hard to get to state finals. Their performance Friday evening was just stunning. I deeply appreciate the support of Mr. Macero, Mr. Crombie, the Winthrop High School community and the community at large.”

On top of being the recipients of the distinguished award, several members of the group were recognized for their individual talent and Winthrop High School took home five all star company awards including:

Elizabeth Carsley for Acting

Ian Page for Acting

Aaliya Rouzky for Lighting Design

Elizabeth Nolen for Sound Design

Emily Nichols, Micaela Grimes, Maxwell Stimpson, Stephen Tracy, Maria Tracy, Samantha Long, Zara Powell, Carolyn Ford, Ryan Parker, Jackson Tolliver, Michael Curcio, Jared Owen, Evan Deleidi for Ensemble Acting.
