Residents and Officials Hold Memorial Day Ceremonies

The support that Winthrop has for its military, both past and present, was evident at Monday’s Memorial Day ceremonies. The rainy weather didn’t stop residents and town personnel from coming out to reflect on those who sacrificed everything so that we can enjoy the simple things that we are afforded today.

St. John’s Episcopal Parish Hall was filled with emotion as speakers shared their own personal stories and gathered in prayer.

“It’s because of veterans that we have the freedom to raise our voices,” said Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo, as he proudly stated that Massachusetts offers more veteran services than any other state.

“As a commonwealth, we can strengthen these services while we reflect on the luxury and freedom we have because of those who sacrificed,” said State Sen. Joseph Boncore. “Military vets are society’s true celebs.”

Those in the room listened intently, as Army Capt. Pete Connor shared his connection to Winthrop’s admirable military support system. Connor, who was raised in Winthrop, expressed his gratitude for the care packages that were sent to him while he served overseas and the unforgettable welcome that he received upon his return home.

“Seeing my name on the Woodside Ace Hardware sign, welcoming me back home is something that I will never forget,” said Connor. “Winthrop takes great pride in veterans.”

Connor said that the hardest thing that he has ever had to do was hand over a folded flag to the mother of a friend and fellow soldier. His heartfelt words attached a somber truth to what sacrifice really means, and sharing his story offered insight for those to reflect on.

While this was the first year that resident and veteran Bud Dacey didn’t put flags on the graves, he was recognized as the recipient of the President Memorial Citation, which was presented by Capt. Mary Jo Majors. His daughter, Kathy Giove, received the award on his behalf.

“My father always gave 100 percent in everything he did,” said Glove.

The Winthrop Memorial Day Committee organized the event and the Winthrop Elks Lodge was the proud sponsor. Exalted Ruler, Laurie Bergeron, opened the ceremonies while Town Veteran Agent Roseann Trionfi-Mazzuchelli gave a special thanks to the committee and her brothers and sisters in the American Legion Post.
