SOCIAL MEDIA, KIDS AND OPIATES

The Winthrop Police and Health Department presents: Social Media, Kids and Opiates “What you think you know, but don’t” on Wednesday, May 18 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Winthrop High School Auditorium.

Parents and community members are welcome to join in for a community forum to address the latest risk of social media and how to keep children safe. What are the current issues with opioids in Winthrop and what is being done to address them? What are the current efforts of the Juvenile Diversion Program and is there a possibility of having a youth center in Winthrop? Come and be informed. A panel discussion will be moderated by Ron Vecchia.

Featured guests include Hon. John McDonald Jr., first justice East Boston District Court; Jacquelyn Lamont, forensic interviewer and social media expert Suffolk County District Attorney’s office; Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty; Winthrop Fire Chief Paul Flanagan; Superintendent of Schools John Macero; Det. Dawne Armistead SRO; Winthrop Public Health Nurse Meredith Hurley; Amy Epstein, director of CASA; peer recovery coaches Chip McHugh and Danielle Fernekees; Winthrop police officer Sarko Gergerian, peer recovery liaison officer and Sean Driscoll, director of parks and recreation.

RPM Walk/Run to Benefit Survivors

Sunday, May 22 will be RPM Fitness’ second annual road-race fundraiser. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Winthrop’s own Survivors by the Sea, so please come out and walk or run to support a great cause. The race will begin and end at RPM and include a nice run along Winthrop Beach. You can find the exact route below.

Sobriety checkpoint this weekend

A Sobriety Checkpoint will be put in place somewhere in Suffolk County this weekend, May 14-15. The Massachusetts State Police will not disclose the location but will be set up on a public way. The purpose is to educate the public, detect and remove motorists who are operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Spring cleaning this Saturday

CASA is sponsoring a spring cleaning event this Saturday, May 14 at Ingleside Park from 12-4 p.m. Join everyone in focusing on positive and healthy choices and lifestyle habits. Declutter and Destress for a healthier you. Bring your own lunch for a picnic in the park. There will be a collection of clothing, consignment and food pantry doonations. There will be community resources for the entire family – physical fitness, healthy eating, substance abuse supports, financial wellness, holistic approaches, community, home and personal safety, youth activities, games, arts and crafts. There will also be music, interactive activities and giveaways. Participate in a resource scavenger hunt and enter to win a FIT basis fitness tracker.
