Football in July

Yes, the New England Patriots open practice in three weeks. Tom Brady will play football in July.

Kudos to Fire Chief Paul Flanagan – the fireworks were awesome. Paul played football for the Vikings. He comes from the Flanagan football family – the late Chief Charlie Flanagan (WHS Hall of Fame), Chuck (a Vikings’ linebacker), and Robert (a Vikings’ end).

Remember East Boston Stadium, practice site for the Boston Patriots in the 1960s. How about Al Sablone’s restaurant? Al and Gino Cappelletti often played golf at the Winthrop Golf Club.

I watched Bob Neumeier on TV this week. In 1981, I saw with Bob in the pressbox at BC’s Alumni Stadium to watch Winthrop defeat Tewksbury, 14-0 – Super Bowl champs!

NEC single-season all-time leading scorers in football: 1.Anthony “TD” Palmer (196 points). 2.Doug Santos, Peabody (190 points). 3. Chucky Sullivan (166 points). 4. Steve Staffier (145 points). Dick Jauron, Swampscott (144 points).

I sat with Pistol Pete Pedro at the Agganis Classic. Pistol Pete scored 196 points in a single season for West Texas State. I played against the Pistol in the Lynn Jamboree.

Winthrop High football coach Sean Driscoll has announced the 2015 football schedule. The team will play Danvers, Medfield, Lynn English, Salem, Gloucester, Saugus, Swampscott, and Revere (Thanksgiving).
