Winthrop Class of 2015 Graduates Friday Night

One-hundred-and-thirty Winthrop High School graduates will receive their diplomas at the Class of 2015 Commencement Exercises Friday night at Miller Field.

Superintendent of Schools John Macero said the class not only excelled scholastically and athletically, but it dealt admirably with the challenge of relocating to the Winthrop Middle School building for its senior year due to the construction of the new middle/high school.

“Because of all the obstacles and issues that they’ve had to face over their senior year with the transition from the old high school to the middle school, this group is one of the most resilient group of students that I’ve ever worked with,” said Macero. “They overcame the challenge and overcame it with dignity. They were a true asset to the Winthrop public schools.”

Macero also commended the class for its athletic achievements, including a national championship cheerleading squad led by senior Jessica Vigliotta, an undefeated Northeastern Conference football championship, an NEC championship hockey team, a North sectional finalist girls soccer team, a North sectional champion girls basketball team that played at the TD Garden, and tournament berths in softball, baseball, and boys lacrosse.

Principal Matt Crombie will extend a welcome to the many guests at the commencement exercises.

Class Marshall Amy Sena will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. President Annie Mahoney will deliver the presidential address.

Valedictorian Michael Mazzone and Salutatorian Katheryn Fraher will deliver their speeches as the top-ranked students in the Class of 2015. Mazzone will be attending Boston College while Fraher will be attending the University of South Carolina.

Crombie and Macero will lead the presentation of diplomas to the graduates.

A total of $322,500 in scholarships will be presented to the graduates. Included in that amount are the presentations of 13 Norma and Paul Facella Scholarships for $15,000 each, one for $20,000, and one for $22,500.
