The Winthrop Ladies Lodge Order Sons of Italy in America presented its annual scholarship to Gianna Famolare, a graduate of Newton Country Day School (NCDS) of the Sacred Heart, who will be attending Villanova University.

Ladies Lodge president Dottie D’Onofrio said that Famolare was honored for her academic excellence, athletic achievement, and leadership skills.

Famolare was one of the top-ranked students in the NCDS Class of 2014. She was a member of the varsity cross country, dance, and sailing teams, serving as a captain of the dance and sailing teams.

She was a member of the National Honor Society, Model UN Club, the Liturgical Dance, Economics Club, and two school singing groups. She was the president of the sophomore class.

Famolare thanked the Ladies Lodge in her acceptance speech.

“Madam President and to all the officers and ladies of the Winthrop Ladies Lodge, I would like to thank you for giving me this scholarship,” said Famolare. “Next year at Villanova I hope to utilize it with my hard work. Thank you.”

Gianna was accompanied to the scholarship dinner at the Porthole Restaurant in Lynn by her parents, Charles and Nancy, and her sister, Kayla, an NCDS Class of 2012 graduate who is a junior at Boston College.

“I would like to thank my parents for all their opportunities that going to Newton Country Day has afforded me,” said Gianna.

She is working this summer as a sailing instructor at a local boat club. She intends to study the sciences at Villanova.
