Clark Wins Winthrop on Way to Congressional Seat

State Sen. Katherine Clark of Melrose will be the new congresswoman representing Winthrop in the United States House of Representatives.

Clark, the Democratic nominee, won by a 2-1 margin district wide over Frank J. Addivinola, the Republican nominee, in the special election held in the Fifth Congressional District that encompasses 24 cities and towns.

In the Winthrop election, Clark received 672 votes while Addivinola, received 644 votes. The turnout in Winthrop was approximately 10 percent.

Clark, 50, succeeds Edward J. Markey, who held the seat for 37 years before being elected United States Senator in a special election in June.

Winthrop residents Donna Segreti Reilly and Kevin Harris were the co-leaders of the Clark congressional campaign in the town.

Reilly said volunteers knocked on doors, held campaign signs, and made numerous phone calls in support of Clark.

I am forever grateful to the small but dedicated group of volunteers who worked so hard to bring Katherine Clark a victory in our town,” said Reilly. “More than anyone we owe a debt of gratitude to Kevin Harris, our campaign co-leader, who was there all the time, juggling his regular job with running the Winthrop for Katherine Clark campaign.”
