The Winthrop High School football team has been through some unique and interesting experiences this season.
The Vikings won a road game against Salem at Beverly’s Hurd Stadium, vied for a playoff berth in the first season of the MIAA’s new postseason format, and had a player, senior captain Jordan Corbett-Frank rush for more than 1,200 yards and counting.
The Vikings continued the recent tradition of a father-son combination at the head coaching and quarterback positions with Sean Driscoll and his son, Dylan, who had an outstanding season [15 touchdowns passing and rushing and more than 100 points scored] and whose leadership has been so exemplary on and off the field that he is a deserving candidate for one of the captaincies of the 2014 team. Driscoll’s predecessor, Tony Fucillo, perfected the father-son scenario with back-to-back brilliant careers from Anthony and James Fucillo, the latter signal caller leading the Vikings to the Super Bowl championship in 2006.
And then there is the new twist to this Winthrop-Revere meeting on Thanksgiving at Miller Field. The 2013 Vikings have the opportunity to defeat their neighbors twice in the same season, having defeated the Patriots, 30-13, on Sept.27.
But Sean Driscoll is only looking ahead to winning the Thanksgiving game, saying the previous conquest of Revere is ancient history to his team.
“That game feels like it was played two years ago,†Driscoll said this week. “There is a lot at stake with the Thanksgiving game. We view it as a one-game championship. We’re also hoping to finish our season with a winning record. We’d like to cap it off with a win for all the hard work of our 13 seniors.â€
In addition to offensive leaders Corbett-Frank and Driscoll, coach Driscoll said he’ll be counting on two-way senior starters James Baxter, Ben Spinazzola, and Vinny Sparacino, linebackers Alex Anzuoni, Tyler Gillis, and defensive back Reise Turransky to lead the way to a victory over Revere and a 6-5 record.
