Gill Seeks Re-Election

In a recent interview with the Transcript, when asked why he is seeking re-election, Council President Peter Gill said “I believe that Winthrop has made tremendous strides in the past fifteen months. The spirit of cooperation and partnership that has been developed among and between our department heads, their staffs, volunteer committee / commission members and citizens working together to achieve improvements in the lifestyle of our community is responsible for this progress”.

Gill went on to say that it has been invigorating to be in the leadership position of Council President and to be part of Winthrop’s future. Much progress has been made. Some long stalled projects are finally underway; including housing developments which are progressing – the redevelopment of the former Winthrop Hospital, Dalrymple School, and Temple Tifereth Israel; the near completion of the new Belle Isle Bridge and the upgraded entrances to our community. Significant infrastructure upgrades include sidewalk and road work with sewer and water system replacement. In addition, redeveloped recreational opportunities including Winthrop Beach restoration, neighborhood parks revitalization and the overall improved cleanliness of our community are all contributing to an improved lifestyle in Winthrop. Equally important, although a bit less obvious improvements include a restructuring of our financial department resulting in more efficient financial systems, operations and controls. Free cash has been certified at $758,000.00, a significant increase over any previous year. Increased partnership between the school department and other departments has proven to be significant, productive and beneficial.

Gill stressed that “Winthrop is a desirable seaside community offering the opportunity of safe, affordable living within easy commuting distance to Boston, a world class city. We need to be committed to the preservation and improvement of Winthrop’s amenities and resources. We need to maintain and improve our community attracting new homeowners to Winthrop and encouraging present homeowners to stay in Winthrop. It is vital to continue to provide an inviting and pleasant atmosphere for our residents and visitors”.

Gill addressed his closing remarks to his fellow citizens: “Humbled by the trust that you, my fellow citizens, placed in me on November 2011 when you elected me to serve as our Town Council President, I look forward to your ongoing support in my second term. Winthrop is a nice place to live. We will continue to strive together to meet the challenges to preserve and improve our beloved community”.
