The Winthrop High School football team will celebrate its 2012 season at the annual breakup banquet Sunday, Jan. 6 at the Lodge of Elks.
The WHS cheerleading squad, led by head coach Rachel Mustone, will also be recognized at the banquet.
Football coach Sean Driscoll said the festivities will begin with dinner at 3:30 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony.
The coaching staff will present ten major awards to players, including the Winthrop Rotary Club’s Irving P. Alexander Trophy.
Driscoll said he will start a new tradition by announcing next season’s captains at the banquet.
“I want to thank the Elks Club for being the host of our banquet for many years and our Booster Club does a tremendous job helping out with this event,†said Driscoll.
The Vikings culminated a 6-5 season with a victory over Revere on Thanksgiving.
“Looking at the end of the year and some of the games we had won and the quality kids on our football team both in the classroom and on the field, it was a winning year – our kids are top notch,†said Driscoll. We won the last three games of the year to leave on a good note and we upset a very good Newburyport team. These kids are great kids who worked hard and never quit.â€
The captains of the 2012 team who will receive special awards along with the other seniors are Dan Feeley, Dave Gallo, Jake McKinnon, and Ruben Powell.
