Gordon Named CFO

Seated are Superintendent of Schools John Macero, new Winthrop
CFO Timothy J. Gordon, Town Manager James McKenna,
and Councilor Linda Calla. Standing are Councillors Craig Mael,
Nicholas DelVento, Larry Powers, James Letterie, Council President
Peter Gill, Vice President Paul Varone, and Councilors Philip Boncore and Russell Sanford.

Town Manager James McKenna announced the appointment of Timothy J. Gordon as the new chief financial officer (CFO) for the Town of Winthrop Tuesday night at the outset of the Town Council meeting.

Gordon, 47, was selected from a field of 20 candidates and seven finalists following an extensive application and interview process. He is a graduate of Framingham State College and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs from the McCormack School at the University of Massachusetts/Boston.

McKenna told the Council that Gordon has a background in the financial industry and the military. He was an auditing director at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a manager at Price Waterhouse Coopers, on the Big Four accounting firms.

McKenna is the current chairman of the Holbrook Board of Selectmen. He is a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard.

“We selected a group of finalists and above all of those finalists Tim stood out as a real leader – simply put, Tim impressed all of us on the task force with his command of the financial language we’re dealing with, his quick report on what he would do in serving this community,” said McKenna.

The town manager said Gordon “appreciated the courage that this town has in going forward in a bit of a pioneering way to consolidate the financial operations and bring everything under one roof so we are all on the same page financially with the town and the schools.”

McKenna said that Gordon will begin in his new position in January.

“We’re really thrilled to come on board,” said McKenna. “[Superintendent of Schools] John Macero and I are very pleased to proud to have Tim as our new CFO.”

Gordon addressed the Council following McKenna’s announcement.

“I appreciated being here and I’m really excited about this opportunity,” said Gordon. “I’m honored to be given the opportunity to serve the citizens of Winthrop. I want to thank the search committee for the trust they have placed in me and making this decision. That’s something that I will honor as I serve in this very important role.”

Gordon said he spent the day at Town Hall last Wednesday and met with department leaders and town employees.

“That was really what sold it for me,” said Gordon. “You have so many dedicated and smart people working in Town Hall and they understand the need to have a strong team and I’m really looking forward to being a part of it.”
