Viking Fall to Amesbury

The Winthrop High football team had its hopes for a league title curtailed by a strong Amesbury High contingent, 35-7, Friday night at Landry Field in Amesbury.

A win over the Fightin’ Indians would have vaulted Winthrop (3-5) back into contention for first place, but the Vikings were unable to find consistency on offense or defense.

“We just couldn’t get any consistent play from either side of the ball,” said coach Sean Driscoll. “We struggled defensively. On offense, we get to the red zone and we fall apart. We were down 14-0 at the half and we just didn’t respond in the second half.”

Sophomore quarterback Dylan Driscoll connected with senior Bo Diaz for a 12-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of play to help Winthrop avert a shutout.

The one-sided defeat overshadowed another solid performance by running back Jordan Corbett-Frank, who had 13 carries for 85 yards. Corbett-Frank also showcased his elusiveness on kickoff returns.

“Jordan Corbett-Frank is our best two-way player right now,” said Driscoll. “He’s a solid football player. He’s one of those kids who does everything you ask of him.”

Sophomore cornerback Zach Deeb provided a defensive highlight when he made a nice play to intercept a pass in the shadow of the end zone, preventing an Amesbury touchdown. Ruben Powell had a couple of nice kickoff returns, threatening to take the football all the way to the end zone.

The Winthrop High senior football players and cheerleaders will be honored during a “Senior Night” ceremony prior to Friday night’s game against Triton Regional at Miller Field.
