Benoit Ends High School Career on High Note

Genevieve Benoit completed her dynamic high school athletic career in style, earning the Most Valuable Player Award in the Agganis Softball Classic at Fraser Filed in Lynn.

Benoit, a catcher for the St. Mary’s High School softball team, belted an RBI triple in the game off of Malden’s All-Scholastic pitcher, Kiara Amos. It accounted for the South’s lone run.

Benoit has strong local connections. She is the daughter of Winthrop High Class of 1979 graduate Gerri (Jaworski) Benoit and Joseph Benoit of Swampscott and the granddaughter of Jerry and Anne Jaworski of Winthrop. Her uncle, Winthrop Police officer Robert “Bubba” Jaworski was a key performer for the 1980 state champion WHS baseball team and the 1981 Super Bowl champion WHS football team. He excelled during a golden era of ice hockey alongside such standouts as John Tiano, Chucky Sullivan, and Joe Giaquinto.

Though Benoit had never played catcher in her high school career, she became the starter this season and was named to the Catholic Central League All-Star team. She helped lead her school teams to four state championships, two in softball and two in hockey. She skated on the TD Garden ice in three state championship games.

Benoit was the recipient of the Cardinal Cushing Award for being the best all-around student in the St. Mary’s graduating class. She was a member of the National Honor Society and excelled in AP and honors classes.

As a result of her outstanding achievements at St. Mary’s, Benoit received an academic scholarship from Salve Regina College where she intends to continue her softball career.

“We couldn’t be more proud of her,” said Gerri Benoit. “She did very well. St. Mary’s was a really great school.”
