Police Searching for Pair in Mugging

Winthrop police chief Terence Delehanty said this week that a trio of street robberies, carried out by two suspects, described as a pair of black males, appear to be related and may also be linked to similar robberies in Revere, Boston and Brookline.

“Over the past week and a half, we’ve had three reported robberies that have taken place on the street at nighttime, when the victims have been walking alone and using their smart phones,” said Chief Delehanty. “In all three cases, the victims said they were approached by two black males while they were on their phones, when the suspects demanded cash and their cell phones.”

Delehanty added that in two of the cases a handgun was shown, including once case where the victim was struck with the gun, after refusing to give up his phone.

Two of the robberies took place on Pleasant Street and a third was on Shirley Street. In each case the suspects fled in a black sedan immediately following the crimes.

“We are working on this case with officers from other neighboring departments, and also seeking any information that might be available through people who have not yet come forward,” said Delehanty. “If anyone thinks they may have seen something, perhaps a license plate or even a partial license plate, we’d like to hear from them.”

Delehanty also cautioned that people walking alone by themselves at night, should take note of their surroundings, be cautious and try not to walk while talking or texting on their phones or otherwise using their smart phones.

“All of the robberies took place late, 10, 11 or 12 at night, when they were walking alone,” said Delehanty.
