Community Heroes Will Be Honored by WCC at January Installation Dinner

As a way to recognize those who work for the betterment of our community, and to launch the year with their new leadership team, the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce will hold its 21st annual Kick-Off Dinner & Awards Night on Friday, January 27.  The Hyatt Harborside at Logan Airport will once again host this event.  The 2012 award recipients include many deserving honorees.

Mary McGunigle will receive the 2012 Educational Excellence award.  She is a reading teacher at the Cummings Elementary School.

Students David Tracy and Erin O’Leary have been named recipients of the Youth Leadership award.  Both are juniors at Winthrop High School.

Sheryl Queen of Twist & Shake will receive the 2012 Chamber Member of the Year award for her active participation in many events throughout the year.

Receiving the Visual Achievement award will be Elliot Whittier Insurance.  The business has made significant physical improvements in their location on Revere Street and has made a major commitment to help beautify the town.

Roseann Mazzuchelli will receive the Community Service award. This honor recognizes her involvement and dedication to Winthrop youth.

The Town Service award will go to MaryLou Osborne, who is stepping down as chairwoman of the School Committee and remains active with CASA.

Receiving the 2012 Coach of the Year Award will be Winthrop High School boys basketball coach Dave Brown.  The team won the state championship title this past year.

David Limina has been named recipient of the Excellence in the Arts award.  A Berklee professor, he has worked with Winthrop students afterschool teaching music.

Receiving the Lifetime Achievement award will be Charlie and Debbie Tewksbury, owners of one of Winthrop’s oldest businesses, Tewksbury’s Greenhouses.

This year’s Patriot Award recipient is Mike Hammerman who will be honored for his work keeping the Five Sisters flag flying proudly over Winthrop Beach for over ten years.

Hong Kong Dragon will receive the 2012 Business of the Year award.  The restaurant renovated and expanded this past year, making a major impact in town.

The Winthrop Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to a wonderful evening at the Hyatt Harborside at Logan Airport on January 27.  Reception is at 6:30, dinner is at 8:00 p.m.
