Softball Team Wins Vacation Tournament

The Winthrop High softball team defeated No. Quincy and Boston Latin to capture the Battle of the Beach softball tournament this past week on the local field.

Tuesday’s championship contest against Latin proved to be a comeback affair for Winthrop, as the Lady Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to overcome a 5-3 deficit and hold on for a 6-5 triumph.

Andrea Martucci delivered an RBI base hit to score lead-off hitter Liana Ferullo (who had a nice day at the plate with two hits, a run, and an RBI) for the first run of the rally and then Taylor Brown delivered another hit to bring in freshman catcher Jen Adamson (two hits, including a double, a run, and an RBI) and Martucci with the tying and winning runs.

Alex Ferri went the entire seven inning route, spinning a nifty four hitter and whiffing 11 enemy batters. All three of the Latin runs off Alex were unearned.

Winthrop preceded that win with a 12-6 thumping of No. Quincy on Monday in the tourney opening round. The Lady Vikings banged out 12 hits, led by Martucci with two hits and three RBI; Brown with two hits and three RBI; and Michelle LaSala with two hits, two runs, and an RBI.

Ferri picked up the win, working five and one third innings in which she yielded just three hits and three earned runs while fanning nine. Jackie Hetherton went the final one and two thirds frames and gave up two hits and no earned runs.

The Lady Vikings endured a rough patch last week against Marblehead, Danvers, and Gloucester, coming out on the short end of all three encounters. Adamson turned in a notable offensive performance in a 5-4 , extra inning loss to Gloucester, accounting for three hits, two runs, two RBI, and two stolen bases in the DH position in the lineup.

“Hopefully the two wins this week will get us back on track and we’ll get on a roll,” said WHS head coach Dave Guffey, whose squad is now 3-3 on the season.

The Lady Vikings were scheduled to host Swampscott yesterday (Wednesday) and will entertain Saugus on Monday. They hit the road to Peabody next Wednesday.
