The Winthrop Lady Bulldogs hockey team rolled to their third straight victory with a decisive 5-0 victory over Masconomet last Wednesday.
The contest was the Taylor Brown Show, as the talented senior defenseman and team captain from Winthrop notched the hat trick, including an end to end rush that brought back memories of Bobby Orr for the “older†fans in attendance.
“Taylor really stepped up for us,†said WHS head coach Anthony Martucci. “She took control of the game.â€
Junior McKenzie Clark, who already has breached the 100 career point mark, also lit the red lamp, as did Courtney McTague, who herself has the 100 point milestone within her sights.
“This was a really nice win for us,†said Martucci. “Masco has been a tough opponent for us in the past couple of years. We knew that playing them would be an early season test for us. Beating them gives us a big boost as we head into the heart of our schedule after the vacation break.â€
Katie Burt, the Lady Bulldogs’ redoubtable eighth grade goalie, earned the shutout, turning aside all 18 pucks that Masco shot at her. Martucci cited a couple of key saves that Burt made near the end of the first period that preserved a 2-0 Winthrop lead going into the locker room as key momentum changers.
Martucci and his crew took on Beverly last night (Wednesday) at Larsen and will be off until next Thursday when they entertain Cambridge.
