Boys skate to a 5-2 win over Beverly

The Winthrop High hockey team improved to 4-1-1 on the season with a 5-2 victory over Beverly and a 1-1 tie with Gloucester last week.

Chris LeBlanc led the way in the scoring department with a pair of goals in Saturday’s triumph over Beverly at Salem State College. Tyler Pettee potted his first marker of the season and Brendan Loomis scored a shorthanded goal on a nice feed from Joe Scarfo with just 11 second left in the second period.

Joe Casey completed the Viking scoring with an empty netter to put the game on ice.

The 1-1 tie with Gloucester proved to be one of those frustrating kinds of games in which Winthrop dominated the entire way, outshooting the Fishermen by a 2-1 margin, but could not put the puck in the net. Loomis lit the lamp for the Vikings on a power play goal.

“Overall, the team is playing well,” said WHS head coach Dale Dunbar. “Our low goals against average (1.17) is an indication that we are playing good team defense. But we still have some things to work on and we need to improve the consistency of our effort.”

Dunbar and his crew were set to play at Saugus yesterday (Wednesday) and then will play at Fenway Saturday against Marblehead under the lights. Please note that the face off time has been changed to 5:15 p.m. Next Wednesday the Vikings will host Lynn at Larsen at 6:10.
