An Exciting Project – Ferry plan could rejuvenate town

There certainly has been an air of excitement around the town with the news that a water transportation ferry service for commuters could begin as soon as May 1. The project is being made possible by a $950,000 grant announced by Congressman Edward Markey that will allow Winthrop to move forward with the proposed ferry service.

Town Harbormaster Chuck Famolare said that the request for proposals (RFP) will go out in early November and ferry service operators will have an opportunity to submit bids for the town’s selection of the operator who will best suit the needs of Winthrop residents.

A ferry service will allow residents to park their cars at the Public Landing and board the shuttle for a 25 minute ride to Rowe’s Wharf in Boston. Conversely, tourists could board the ferry in Boston for a visit to the town.

We agree with Councillor Linda Calla’s assertion that a ferry could provide a real boon for businesses and for the housing market. Tourists would get the chance to see what a pretty seaside town that Winthrop is, and some just might decide to stay. The possibilities for sightseeing trips, dinner cruises, fishing trips, and other excursions also make it an exciting venture.

We thank Congressman Markey for moving this project forward and we look forward to next spring when Winthrop residents can take advantage of the ferry service.
