Anna Levy, 92

Feisty, Friendly and Giving Woman

Anna (Mendelow) Levy of Winthrop, a feisty, friendly, and giving woman, died recently. She was 92 years old.

She was the beloved wife of the late Sidney Levy; devoted mother of Linda Levy of Chelsea and Karl S. Lev, Sr. and his wife, Patty, of Chapel Hill, Tenn.; dear grandmother of Monica L. Gaines and her husband, Keith, and Karl S. Levy Jr. and his wife, Tonya; loving sister of the late Charles and Manny Mendelow; and she is also survived by four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon.

Catherine Lingos, 83

Retired waitress and member of the Philoptochos Woman’s Society

Catherine (Williams) Lingos of Winthrop died at the Eastpointe Nursing Care Center in Chelsea on May 9. She was 83 years old.

A member of the Philoptochos Woman’s Society, prior to her retirement, she worked as a waitress in the restaurant industry.

Born in Boston, she was the beloved wife of George W. Lingos; daughter of the late Matthew and Helen (Trakais) Williams; beloved wife of George W. Lingos; devoted mother of Charles G. Lingos of Chelsea and Athena E. Cannon and her husband, James A., of Miami, Fla.; sister of Charles Williams of Dedham, Liberty Fiveash of S. Weymouth, Virginia Sebastian of Alexandria, Va., Mary Rhodes of Cherry Hill, NJ, and Demetria Williams of Taunton; adored grandmother of James W. and Kathleen Cannon. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, Winthrop. Burial was in Winthrop Cemetery (Belle Isle Section).

Edith DiBiccari, 91

Retired Secretary

Edith (Zaccaria) DiBiccari of Winthrop died at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on May 6. She was 91 years old

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. DiBiccari worked as a secretary in the real estate industry.

Born in Albany, NY, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Maria (Pecci) Zaccaria; beloved wife of the late Frank DiBiccari; devoted mother of Frank DiBiccari of Winthrop; sister of the late Leo and Anthony Zaccaria and Rose Santamaria; adored grandmother of Frank III, and Michael DiBiccari and Lisa Mullen; cherished great-grandmother of Michael and Joseph Mullen. She also leaves behind her lovable pets, her dog, Peppi, and her cat, Smokey.

Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, Winthrop. Cremation was private.

Dr. Joseph Levitan, 89

Optometrist, longtime Winthrop summer resident

Dr. Joseph J. Levitan of Milton, a summer resident of Winthrop from 1924 until 1993, died on May 6. He was 89 years old.

Dr. Levitan was an optometrist with an office on West Broadway, South Boston for many years until his retirement in November of 1993.

Dr. Levitan was born in Lawrence on December 3, 1918, son of the late Ellis and Ethel (Fishbane) Levitan. When he was an infant, his parents moved to South Boston, where he attended the Drake and Lawrence schools before relocating to Dorchester. He graduated from the Oliver Wendell Holmes School in 1932, Boston English High School in 1935 and the Massachusetts School of Optometry, now the New England College of Optometry, in 1939. He was a member of the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists for more than 50 years.

He was associated with the optical clinic of the now closed Boston State Hospital in Mattapan for many years.

He was active in Masonic Lodge activities and was a past master of Zetland Lodge of Boston, a past master of Moses Michael Hays Lodge of Needham, a past master of the Seventh Lodge of Instruction of Cambridge, a member of Everett C. Benton Lodge of Boston and a charter and honorary member of the original Zerubbabel Lodge of Dorchester, which became the Cosmopolitan Lodge of Stoughton.

He was awarded the prestigious Joseph Warren Medal for Distinguished Service in 1983 and was later appointed a Grand Representative from the State of Delaware. He was also a life member of all Scottish Rite Bodies as well as the Shriner’s Aleppo Temple. He was elected a Fellow of Brandeis University and was a member of the Sachar Legacy Society of Brandeis.

He was a resident of Milton since 1956. Dr. Levitan was a longtime member of Temple Shalom of Milton, where he was a member of the board of directors.

He was the devoted son of the late Ellis and Ethel (Fishbane) Levitan, dear brother of the late Harry S. Levitan, also of Milton, and he is survived by several cousins.

Funeral arrangements were by the Levine Chapel, Brookline. Burial was at the Kenesseth Israel Cemetery, Woburn.
