Town officials offer support in wake of resident’s suicide

Town Council President Jim Letterie held a moment of silence at the beginning of last week’s council meeting, urging residents to spread kindness in the community.

The moment of silence came in the wake of a suicide in town on Monday, Oct. 19.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m. on the 19th, Winthrop Police responded to a report of a person in need of assistance at a residence near Magee’s Corner. As a result of the incident, a deceased male individual was discovered inside the home along with two deceased dogs, according to Winthrop police. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office assumed jurisdiction of the investigation in coordination with local police.

“I’m going to offer a moment of silence as an opportunity to reflect on bonds that connect us in a community as close as ours,” said Letterie. “We share not only in each others’ joys, but also in moments of sorrow that can be difficult to put into words. We offer one another kindness without needing explanations, understanding without judgement, and support without expectations.

“No one should have to carry their burdens alone, and even the smallest gesture of compassion can bring comfort when it is needed most,” he continued. “I ask that we may take this moment to honor the love that connects us, to make room for those who are hurting, and to remind each other that we are here for each other as a community.”

The Winthrop Public Health Department posted several mental health resources online in the wake of the suicide.

If people are struggling, worried about someone, or simply need someone to talk to, they can call 988, text 988, or visit https://988lifeline.org/chat/. You do not need to be experiencing thoughts of suicide to reach out for support.
