Ladies gathering around Shihan Chris Crocker during The Friends of Winthrop Beach Self Defense for Women workshop, in partnership with Cervizzi's Martial Arts Academy
As part of its “Get Healthy on the Beach” series, The Friends of Winthrop Beach, in partnership with Winthrop Parks and Recreation, Save the Harbor, and Cervizzi’s Martial Arts Academy presented Self-Defense for Women on August 20. Ladies gathered on Yirrell Beach for the free workshop led by Shihan Chris Crocker, who demonstrated simple techniques for any age and level of expertise.
“We’re going to talk about how fear creates the victim, what to look out for, how to be more aware than you are usually, daily habits, and taking care of ourselves,” said Crocker, CEO and Chief Instructor, Cervizzi’s, who has been practicing martial arts for 31 years.
Crocker has offered self-defense workshops for teachers, college students, and flight attendants, focusing on being more conscious of one’s surroundings, finding balance, and utilizing one’s body weight.
“The commonality is confidence and being aware,” Crocker stressed. “A lot of the time in daily life – especially now with phones and computer screens – we’re distracted.”
