Edward F. “Pudgy” Lally, Jr.

Retired National Grid Lineman

Edward F. Lally, Jr., affectionately known as “Pudgy,” passed away at his home on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on May 20, 1948, in Boston, he was the beloved son of the late Edward F. Lally, Sr. and Katherine (Brennan) Lally.

A lifelong resident of Winthrop, Pudgy graduated from Winthrop High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Following his military service, he began a career as a lineman with National Grid, where he dedicated more than four decades to hard work, dependability, and service before retiring.

On October 18, 1975, he married the love of his life, Mary E. (Doherty) Lally. Together they built a beautiful life centered on family, laughter, and unwavering devotion, sharing more than fifty years of marriage.

Pudgy was larger than life. He never met a stranger, loved telling a good story often with a little embellishment and had a quick wit that kept everyone laughing. Fiercely competitive and full of personality, he enjoyed life’s simple pleasures and treasured the friendships he made along the way.

Growing up in Winthrop, he spent countless days sailing, playing hockey and basketball, and running amok through “The Maze” with his siblings, cousins, and lifelong friends. His love for the ocean never faded, and sailing remained one of his greatest passions throughout his life, especially Wednesday night races with friends. He also enjoyed golfing, faithfully playing his favorite lottery numbers, and took tremendous pride in keeping his lawn and pool in immaculate condition.

Above all else, Pudgy was a devoted husband, a proud father, and an extraordinary “Papa.” Nothing brought him greater joy than cheering on his grandchildren from the sidelines of countless local youth sporting events. His love for his family was steadfast, and the memories he created with them will be cherished forever.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Lally; his four daughters: Elizabeth Ferrara and her husband, Paul, Kerri McKeever and her husband, Sean, Kimberly Paulson and her husband, Mark and Colleen Doiron and her husband, David; his sisters: Michelle, Kathleen and Christine; his twelve adored grandchildren: Reese, Paul, Lola, Liam, Colin, Dillon, Fritz, Frankie, Maeve, Andie, Milo and Ivy and countless nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home Winthrop on Sunday, July 5 from 4 to 8z p.m. The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Monday, July 6 at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
