Winthrop lost one of its best-ever citizens this summer with the passing of John Domenico, whose funeral services were held this past Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church.
John contributed to the Winthrop community in countless ways — the Sun-Transcript named him one of the 100 Winthrop Citizens of the Century in our special millennium edition of January, 2000 — and is best-known for his role as a teacher, administrator, coach, and a mentor to thousands of Winthrop students whose lives were affected by him in a positive way during his 34-year career in the Winthrop school system from 1952-86.
What we most will remember about John is that he was a man of boundless energy — he was always on the go. As a founding member of the Winthrop Hall of Fame and a driving force for the tennis community in Winthrop for decades (the courts at Ingleside Park are named in his honor), John Domenico personified the term “Viking Pride” — and he did so without seeking the limelight.
