Championship Pedigree: Quinton Dale Named As New Winthrop Boys Basketball Coach

Quinton Dale II, an All-Star player on the 2011 state champion Winthrop High School boys basketball team, has been named as the new head of the Vikings’ basketball program.

“I’m very excited about being Winthrop’s head coach,” said Dale, 29. “I’ve met with the entire team to go over the summer league plans. They seem very fired-up and ready to start winning, and I’m ready to get to work.”

During his stellar career at Winthrop, Dale played four years of varsity basketball under head coach David Brown. He was a 6-foot-2-inch junior power forward when the Vikings, defeated Cohasset at the Boston Garden to capture the Division 4 crown. Winthrop claimed the NEC championship in Dale’s final season.

Dale was highly regarded as a versatile performer for the Vikings, excelling as a complimentary scorer, strong rebounder, tenacious defender, and active shot blocker.

One of his teammates on the 2011 state championship team was current Winthrop High girls basketball coach Anthony Hatzisavas.

Dale went on to play basketball at Wheaton College where he was a three-year starter and an All-NEWMAC selection. He sat out his sophomore season due to a knee injury.

Dale, who studied Business in college, works as an insurance agent at First Indemnity Insurance (Boston), a firm owned by Andrew Biggio.

His Father Was a Basketball Legend

Quinton II is the son of former high school and Northeastern University basketball star Quinton Dale I, a 6-foot-6-inch forward. Dale played during a golden era of Northeastern basketball, excelling on the court alongside Reggie Lewis, who went on to become an NBA All-Star for the Boston Celtics. (Mr. Lewis died of cardiac arrest at the age of 27 in 1993).

“When I was born, my father was already coaching at Winchester High, so as long as I can remember, I’ve been around the game,” said Quinton II. “Yes, my father was a pretty good player and he competed in pro basketball overseas.”

Quinton II said his father will be joining the Winthrop staff as a volunteer assistant coach. “I’m very excited to have his guidance in our program. I know he’ll be passing along his wisdom and his experience on to the players, the other coaches, and me.”

Dale also credits his mother, Sandra, for her support and encouragement.

“My mom has been my biggest supporter,” said Quinton. “She’s been to just about every one of my games in my career. She’s an amazing mother and an amazing hard worker. She keeps me motivated, and I’m happy to have support from her, as well as my younger sister, Vanessa. She graduated from Winthrop High in 2015, [then] UConn, and just got her master’s degree from Emerson in Speech Language Pathology. She’s doing big things.”

Lauding David Brown’s Contributions to his Basketball Development

Dale said he received a well-rounded basketball experience as a player in David Brown’s program.

“David Brown is a phenomenal coach,” said Dale. “I wouldn’t have been the player I am without him. He’s a big reason, along with my father, that I got into coaching. I’m thankful to Coach Brown. We had a lot of success together. I’m looking forward to hopefully  matching up against St. Mary’s in the future.”

Dale was a former assistant coach for the Winthrop High girls basketball team during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He coached the past two seasons in the Winchester High boys program where his father was previously the head coach.

Dale said he has great memories of the day that he and his teammates brought a state championship back to Winthrop.

“We had a parade around town on the bus with a police escort, and then everyone met at the gym, cut down the nets, and had a big celebration,” recalled Dale. “That’s the goal – to get the program back competing for those championships as soon as possible. It’s good to be coming home and giving back to the program that gave so much to me. Mr. [Matt] Serino is a great athletic director, and I’m very excited to work with him as well.”

Winthrop AD Matt Serino Welcomes Back Quinton Dale II to the Hoop Program

“We are thrilled to name Quinton Dale as our next head basketball coach,” said Winthrop High Director of Athletics Matt Serino. “Quinton is a Winthrop High alum and was a member of the last state title team under the legendary coach [David] Brown. His pride and love of this program, school, and town are unwavering. He brings an energetic coaching style and has a passion for the game that will greatly benefit our student-athletes. We are beyond excited for Coach Dale and the boys basketball program.”
