Wallerces Commit to Community With Purchase of Winthrop Marketplace Property

What started as a vision in one man’s eye 24 years ago has transformed and now solidified as a community mainstay this summer. After months of diligent work with our local bank, Rockland Trust, we are thrilled to announce that we have purchased the building where we operate our grocery business, the Winthrop Marketplace. .  We have always loved being a part of this Winthrop community and are excited to be able to commit to this town for the long term.

Mark Wallerce and Chris Wallerce of Winthrop Marketplace, in the company of town officials and store employees, prepare to cut the ribbon at the ceremony celebrating the family’s purchase of the building in which the Winthrop Marketplace operates it grocery business.

Running a family-owned grocery store has many challenges as we do our best to compete with the much larger chain stores that surround us.  Some of the main components that have kept us in business this long is our focus on maintaining a clean, inviting, and friendly store, keeping our perishable items fresh and appealing, and efficiently processing your orders so that you can be on your way.  But the most important part of our store is our employees.  They are the ones who greet you when you walk in, help you find what you need, make the special orders and fulfill special requests. In essence, it is our employees who make our store what it is, and we have been incredibly lucky to have such a great team over the years- some who have been with us since day one!

So many people have helped and supported us over the years.  From our early stages of just opening up to dealing with power outages to COVID pandemic disruptions of the supply chain, we have been so fortunate to have the unwavering support of this town and our customers.  Thank you for all that you do, we couldn’t have done this without you.

As a family owned and operated business, we truly look forward to serving as your neighborhood grocery store for many years to come. We may now own the building and the business, but the Winthrop Marketplace belongs to the town of Winthrop, and we are always striving to serve our community better.
