Jurovich, Harris, Chaves are Elected WHS Football Captains

Winthrop High School football coach Jon Cadigan has announced that seniors Pete Jurovich, Ian Harris, and Mikey Chaves  have been elected as captains of the 2021 Vikings.

The team conducted elections last week, with each coach and player eligible to cast one vote.

Jurovich, Harris, and Chaves all made significant contributions in starting roles for the 2020 Northeastern Conference South Division championship team.

“I am happy with the selection of our captains,” said Cadigan. “Those three guys really worked hard in the off-season. It was a different off-season in that it was much shorter (the 2020 season was held in the spring due to COVID-19), but I thought they did a very good job of following in the footsteps of last year’s team and the path it set down.”

Vikings Play Well in Scrimmage Against Beverly

The Vikings played Beverly to a 6-6 tie in a 10-plays-per-possession scrimmage last Saturday at Miller Field. Junior quarterback Robert Noonan impressed at the helm of the offense with three completions for 75 yards and another 23 yards in rushing. Sophomore George Galuris had a 39-yard reception while senior running back Cam Martin had two catches for 36 yards. Martin (38 yards rushing) scored Winthrop’s touchdown on a five-yard run on the second possession of the game. Other running backs seeing action in the scrimmage were Welvis Acosta, Robert Rich, George Galuris, and Evan Rockefeller.

“We averaged over 6 yards a carry and had 120 total yards rushing from our backs,” said Cadigan. “We were looking for balance in the offense and we got that in the scrimmage.”

Cadigan felt that Pete Jurovich, Ian Harris, Joe Hayes, and Even Rockefeller were the standouts on defense against Beverly.

Cadigan said that senior Juan Sanchez will be the Vikings’ placekicker in the upcoming season.

“I think Juan’s going to really help us on field goals, extra points, and kickoffs,” said Cadigan.

The Vikings were scheduled play East Boston High Wednesday at East Boston Stadium. On Friday, the Vikings play Manchester-Essex at 4 o.m. on the Hornets’ home field in Manchester-by-the-Sea.
