Peaceful Demonstration Held in French Square

Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty said that a demonstration held Saturday in Winthrop was “peaceful” and went on without any incidents.

The group, estimated to consist of 30 individuals with some holding signs and using bullhorns, was airing its concerns about a bill in the Mass. House of Representatives “relative to the issuance of driver’s licenses to certain persons unable to provide proof of lawful presence.”

According to Catherine Williams, spokeperson for Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo, the bill, House No. 3012, is going through the Joint Committee on Transportation process.

Delehanty said the Police Department advised  Speaker DeLeo about Saturday’s protest in the town.

The group began its march in Orient Heights, East Boston, and walked in to Winthrop, continuing along Main Street and Winthrop Street, passing Town Hall and proceeding in to French Square.

“There were no issues or incidents with the group,” said Delehanty. “They were respectful and exercised their First Amendment rights.”

Delehanty had extra police officers on duty during the protest, escorting the group along the march and protecting the safety of Winthrop motorists whose access was interrupted for a short time on various streets.

Dog Licenses Available January 2020

Dog licenses for the year 2020 will be available for purchase beginning January 2, 2020.

There are two ways to get a license:

2. Wait until the middle of January for the annual census to be mailed to your home, on the bottom will be a mail in slip, you can send in check and proof of rabies in the same envelope as the census and tag will be mailed to you.

Staff cuts have eliminated the ability of processing of Dog Licenses. Late fees begin April 1, 2020 this new policy will ensure that your order is quickly and efficiently processed in the staff hours available. Please contact our office with any questions.

Please note the Town Clerk’s Office does not save Rabies information, nor do we have it if you used the Town sponsored rabies clinic. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to have medical information for your animals.

The Town would also like to remind residents  that the only dogs welcome in Town Hall are service dogs. It is for the safety of our residents and employees that we enforce this law.
