Class of ‘94 Honors Classmates with Scholarship Fund

Winthrop High School Class of 1994 has initiated a scholarship fund  that will honor two of their classmates, while helping graduating students progress in their education.

“We wanted to do something special and honor our lost classmates,” said class of 1994 graduate, Jill Callinan. “There is no better way to do that than to give back to the community we all grew up in.”

The idea came from a few classmates while they were planning the reunion back in April. Since graduation, the tight-knit class of 110 has lost two fellow classmates, Scott Baribeau and Anthony Palmer. Thanks to the generous donations from the class of 1994, the planning committee was able to raise $1,000 that will be broken up into four $250 scholarships.

“Anthony and Scotty came from two different worlds, but both made their mark in this world and excelled in and out of the classroom to the best of their abilities,” said graduate, Stacie Mackenzie. “They leave a lasting impression on the Class of 1994.”

Four students from the Class of 2020, planning to attend a two year or four year college, will be recipients of these scholarships. Students majoring in the Special Education field will be invited to apply to the Scott Baribeau scholarship, and students specializing in athletics or physical education can apply to the Anthony Palmer scholarship.

The class plans to have a small group of evaluators who will judge the essays, aiming to select a student with strong goals of excelling in their chosen major.
