WHS softball team wins season-opener

The Winthrop High softball team won its season-opener in a big way, defeating Mt. Alvernia, 12-6, last week. Sofia Vitale went all seven innings for the victory, allowing just two hits.

However, the Lady Vikings did not fare as well in their next two contests, dropping decisions of 8-0 to Wakefield and 12-0 to Marblehead. Winthrop managed just one hit in each of those encounters, both coming from the bat of Stephanie Strangie.

A bright spot for the Lady Vikings has been the play of catcher Katie Gagnon, who has thrown out six enemy base runners thus far this season.

Coach Dave Guffey and his crew were scheduled to host Beverly yesterday (Wednesday) and Saugus on Monday. They will trek to Swampscott next Wednesday.

WHS girls lacrosse wins two contests

The Winthrop High girls lacrosse team improved to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the South Division of the Northeastern Conference with a pair of decisive victories this past week over Malden, 12-5, and Saugus, 18-6.

Leading the way offensively for the Lady Vikings in the Malden triumph were Emma Carleton and Kaiya Rodriguez with three goals apiece. Maura Dorr and Carolyn Kinsella both reached the back of the Malden net for two goals.

Jenna Dorr, twin sister Maura, and Kinsella also were standouts in the field, scooping up five ground balls each to maintain possession for Winthrop.

Rodriguez, who was making her first start with the varsity, earned the Player of the Game award from WHS coach Ben Cimmino for her hat trick performance.

In the big win over Saugus, Emma Carleton, Mia Martucci, and Maura Dorr were the top goal-scorers. Martucci also had three assists and six ground balls, an all-around effort for which she earned Player of the Game honors.

Cimmino and his crew will host Revere Friday (tomorrow) at 10 a.m. They will entertain St. Mary’s of Lynn Monday at 7 p.m. under the lights at Miller Field before hitting the road to Salem on Tuesday.
