WHS boys lacrosse opens with two wins

The Winthrop High boys lacrosse team opened its season in strong fashion with a pair of victories this past week.

This past Saturday, the Vikings defeated Manchester-Essex, 15-9.

“This was an excellent win against a good Manchester-Essex team,” said WHS head coach Brian Donnelly. “Our defense and goalie played very well, only letting in three goals throughout the first three quarters.”

The Winthrop offense was led by attack sophomore Matt Hurley, who had five goals and three assists.

“We controlled the tempo of the game by winning the ground ball games,” noted Donnelly. “Our long-stick middies, Jack Silva and Chris Rodriguez, performed excellently anchoring our defense.”

This past Monday evening, the Vikings had little trouble dispatching Everett, 18-4.

“This was an excellent team effort, where we were able to get our younger guys some great looks,” said Donnelly.

The Vikings are scheduled to host Lynn Classical this evening (Thursday) at 6:30 at Miller Field. They will entertain Medford on the holiday on Monday at 10 a.m. and then will make the short trek to Revere next Thursday.

This week’s schedules for WHS sports teams

All of the Winthrop High spring sports teams are slated to be in action this week. The WHS baseball team was scheduled to open its season yesterday (Wednesday) at Mystic Valley. Coach Frank DeMarco and his crew then will host Boston English this Saturday morning at 11:00 and will entertain Marblehead at 10 a.m. on the holiday on Monday. They will travel to Beverly on Wednesday.

The Lady Viking softball team was scheduled to play at Mt. Alvernia in their season-opener yesterday (Wednesday). They will host Wakefield Friday afternoon and travel to Marblehead on Monday before returning home to host Beverly Wednesday at 10 a.m. The girls’ lacrosse team was scheduled to play Malden yesterday (Wednesday) and will entertain Saugus today (Thursday).

The WHS track teams will travel to Saugus today (Thursday) and to Swampscott on Tuesday.

The tennis teams played Beverly yesterday (Wednesday) and the boys will host Lynn Classical next Thursday.

Wallace is off to strong start for Franklin Pierce baseball team

Winthrop’s Jack Wallace is making a big contribution for the Franklin Pierce University baseball team.

Wallace, a 5-foot-11-inch, 185-pound sophomore righthander, has made nine appearances in relief for the Division 2 Ravens (14-13), who have won five of their last six games.

An All-NEC player for the Winthrop Vikings baseball team and the NEC individual golf champion, as well as a captain of both teams, Wallace (1-0) has recorded eight strikeouts in 9.2 innings and has an ERA of 2.79.

A Sports and Recreation Management major, Wallace is also excelling in the classroom, having been named to the Northeast-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The award is given to student-athletes who achieve a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
