WMS Quiz Bowl Team Finishes in Second Place

The Winthrop Middle School Quiz Bowl team earned second place in the Malden Catholics Annual Quiz Bowl while competing against 10 other middle schools from across the Commonwealth. This year marked the 25th year of the annual event, that includes five classroom rounds and one stage round of questions from a variety of categories including Pixar Movies, European Geography, Richard Nixon, Mental Math, Singers of the 80’s, Norse Mythology, British Commonwealth Nations and The Big Dig.

Eight Grade Science and Social Studies teacher and Quiz Bowl Coach, Chris Farnsworth and Quiz bowl team:  Dan Tracy, Maggie Doig, Analise Bruno, Ty Calinda, Ivy Crespo, Julia Dickinson.

During classroom rounds, students from two teams competed to accrue the most points possible, and whichever team raised a pencil first, was the first allowed to answer, similar to the hit game show, Jeopardy. Teams earned 10 points for a correct answer and negative five for an incorrect one. Winthrop students scored the most amount of points during the stage rounds and had the most points after classroom and stage rounds were complete. After a sudden death playoff with the three highest-scoring teams, Winthrop walked away with a second-place finish.
