Varone, Delvento Won’t Run for Council

By Sue Ellen Woodcock

Precinct 2 Councilor Paul Varone has announced that he will not be seeking re-election to the Winthrop Town Council.

Varone has served the last eight years on the council. (See his letter to the editor).

“I have had the honor and privilege of working with a dedicated group of councilors, a visionary town manager, and town employees who have rolled up their sleeves to devote their time, energy and commitment to the work of managing and maintaining our beautiful town.  Everyone involved has the best interests of the community at heart,” said Varone.

Joining him in stepping to the sideline will also be Precinct 3 Councilor Nick Delvento who has also not taken out nomination papers for a reelection bid.

Delvento has served for 12 years on the council, and was one of the original members who came on board after the town charter change. During his time on the council he has chaired the finance committee.

“It’s just time to retire,” Delvento said. “I think the town is in a good spot.”

He noted that the municipal buildings are in good shape.

“Look at other communities and you’ll see we’re not that bad,” Delvento said. “We’ve torn down the walls between the town and the schools.”
