137 to Graduate from Winthrop High on Friday Night

By Cary Shuman

One-and-thirty-seven graduates of the Winthrop High School Class of 2016 will receive their diplomas at commencement ceremonies Friday night inside the Larsen Rink at the Michael Eruzione Center.

The class will be the last to graduate from the
“old” Winthrop High School. Students have been attending classes at the former Winthrop Middle School building on Pauline Street while a new, state-of-the-art $80 million Winthrop Middle/High School has been under construction. The spectacular building will open for the 2016-17 school year.

Class President Julia Duplin will make the presidential address at the graduation ceremony. James Forster III will deliver the valedictory address. Andrew Alcala will deliver the salutatory address.

Several graduates will receive scholarships during the awards program in recognition of their academic and athletic achievements.

Supt. of Schools John Macero and WHS Principal Matthew Crombie will also address the gathering. Mr. Crombie and Assistant Principal Michael Capasso will present the diplomas to the graduates.

Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo, State Sen. Joseph Boncore, Town Council President Robert Driscoll Jr., School Committee Chair Dawn Sullivan and her colleagues on the School Committee, Town Manager James McKenna, Police Chief Terence Delehanty, and Fire Chief Paul Flanagan are among the invited dignitaries.
