Residents Propose Names for New Middle/High School

Proposed names for the new middle/high school, located at the corner of Main St. and Payson St., have been buzzing around town since School Committee Chairman, Gary Skomro, announced that names for the school were being considered. Suggestions include Winthrop Viking School and the William Hurley Middle/High School; however, many prefer that the school traditionally remain as Winthrop High School (WHS).

“I feel strongly against naming it after someone,” said Karin Chavis, School Building Assistance Committee Member, who has spoken to several 8th graders about their opinions. “I believe that the kids going to that school want to be known as WHS graduates.”

Most of the populace feels that keeping the town’s name in the school’s title is important to the community. Christopher Hurley, a former Viking athlete, proposed that the school should be named in honor of his father, General William Hurley, who was a WHS math teacher for 35 years.

“I think naming the school after somebody who has been an educator and contributor to the Town of Winthrop would be appropriate,” said Hurley. “He had a distinguished career in the National Guard and United States Army. I believe naming the school after a member of the military would add to the pride and prestige within the town.”

Hurley feels that naming the school after a member of the military would commemorate the sacrifices of the men and women of Winthrop who have served our country.

“On target, on time, on budget,” said Superintendent John Macero. “We’re pleased with that. The projected date for the school to be done with construction is June 30.”
