Anthony C. Fucillo

The passing this past week of Anthony C. Fucillo at the age of 96 marks the end of an era for long-time residents of this town who had the honor of knowing this wonderful man.

Family was everything to Mr. Fucillo, who took immense pride in the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, and who was devoted to his wife Annette. Moreover, Mr. Fucillo served as an amazing role model, not only to his family members, but to all of us who came to know him.  He enlisted in the Army after the Normandy invasion and served in General Patton’s 101st Infantry 6th Armored Division, serving in Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star in recognition of his acts of heroism, meritorious achievement, and meritorious service in a combat zone.

But though he was a war hero, Mr. Fucillo was a man of great humility and dignity who found joy and honor in life’s simple pleasures. Indeed, it is fair to say that his longevity can be attributed not only to his genes, but to having found the secret to a happy life.

He was extremely charitable to a myriad of causes and was an avid supporter of local school sports programs, as well as colleges. (Memorial donations may be made to Winthrop Charities 28 Thornton St., Winthrop MA 02152.)

We know we join with all Winthrop residents in offering our condolences to Mr. Fucillo’s family upon their loss, and we know we join them in recalling our many wonderful memories of this fine man who graced our community for so many decades.
