Teachers of the Month Make Learning Fun

Winthrop High School teachers Mark Dixon, left, and Mike
Nickerson, can’t help but make students enjoy learning in their classes. Dixon teaches psychology and history while Nickerson is a world language teacher teaching Spanish.

Every student has their favorite teacher and the Viking Pride Association is recognizing one of them each month and giving each one an ITunes gift card

In January, Winthrop High School teacher Mike Nickerson was selected. He is a world language teacher for all grade levels. Currently, he is teaching Spanish. Nickerson has been at WHS for the past six years. He is a graduate of Stonehill College and received his master’s degree from Salem State University.

“I love the students,” Nickerson said. “It’s different from other classes. The culture they’re exposed to is great.”

The honor for February was given to Mark Dixon, an 11th grade teacher of history and psychology. He has been a Winthrop High School teacher for the last 14 years. The California native is a graduate of the University of Wyoming. He said he enjoys teaching a subject students enjoy.

“They’re favorites among the students,” said WHS senior Jessica Vigliotte, “They’re excellent quality teachers the kids look up to.”

Vigliotte added that both teachers enhance the atmosphere at the high school. She and other students worked with Nicholson on a special project called, “Project Bethlehem.”

“We sponsored families from the Lawrence area for Christmas,” Vigliotte said.

She added that the two teachers teach the most exciting courses.

“It’s an elective, not a core course. With an elective you want to be in the class,” Vigliotte said.
