Vikings ready to take on the Saugus Sachems on Saturday at Miller Field

The 2014 Vikings Football Team plays host to The Saugus Sachems Saturday at 12:00 pm at Miller Field.

The Vikings concluded the pre-season with their final scrimmage on Labor Day with the Ipswich Tigers.

“It was good to see the improvement from the Beverly scrimmage to the Ipswich scrimmage. We are making progress and the hot weather has helped our conditioning” said Coach Sean Driscoll.

The Sachems finished (3-8) in 2013 after a (35-24) victory over  The Peabody Tanners on Thanksgiving Day.  Quarterback Justin Winn and Dan Cacciola are the twp backs the Vikings must contain on Saturday.

The starting offensive line for The Vikings has seniors Co-Capt. Zach Deeb and David Kirby at end. Junior Jeff Collignon is the left tackle and senior James Griffin is the right tackle.

Co-Capt. Sean Gillis starts at left guard and Rolando Recinos is the right guard. Senior Brady Magrath opens at center.

The QB is three-year starter Co-Captain Dylan Driscoll.  Number 10 has been impressive in pre-season.

The backfield is deep, talented and has plenty of speed. Seniors Jake Chiudina, Jordan Atkins, Co-Captain Tyler Gillis, Anthony Gallo, junior Reise Turrasky and sophomore Jonathan Gonzales will move the pig skin.

The Vikings defense has plenty of experience.  Sean Gillis and Kirby are the defensive ends.  Collignon is the nose tackle.  Recinos and Griffin will see plenty of action on the line.

The line backing squad has plenty of experience.  Co-Capt. Tyler Gillis and Gonzales are on the outside.  Co-Captain Chris Beaudry and Senior Alex Anzuoni are in the middle.

The defensive backs are Deeb, Turransky, Senior Nick Moulaison and Junior Dan Dellano.  Jack Chiudina is the strong safety.  Sophomore Chris Zuffante is in reserve.

The Vikings defeated the Malden Tornados (21-6) on last Friday night at Everett Memorial Stadium in NEC-GBL scrimmage.

Dylan Driscoll (4 for 8, 90 yards) connected with Co-Capt. Zach Deeb (24 yards) and Jordan Adkins (20 yards).

 Jack Chiudina added a 32-yard rushing touchdown and three extra points.

 Everett defeated Lynn Classical (28-12).  Lynn Classical plays host to The Gloucester Fishermen Friday night at Manning Field.

The Everett High School (EHS) football team and the Greater Boston League (GBL) hosted the inaugural GBL/NEC eight-team Football Jamboree at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night, with guests including Winthrop, Lynn Classical, and Lynn English. There were four games, with each game consisting of two 12-minute quarters.

Winthrop prevailed easily, 21-6, in its scrimmage against Malden – with Quarterback Dylan Driscoll hitting for two touchdowns on 4 of 8 passing. A standout at running back was Jake Chiudina, who had a noteworthy 31-yard touchdown run.

The Vikings open up the official season this Saturday, Sept. 6, at Saugus.

Golfers open season with win over Revere

The Winthrop High golf team, coming off a 2013 season that was the most successful in the program’s history, picked up where it left off last year with a 54.5-17.5 victory over Revere Tuesday at the local golf course.

The contest originally had been scheduled for Revere’s home course, but was moved to Winthrop Golf Club when the Patriots’ Cedar Glen venue became unavailable.

Leading the way for coach Peter Lyons’s Vikings were the duo of senior captain Mike Rich, playing at No. 1, and sophomore Jack Wallace, who plays in the No. 2 slot. Rich, who qualified for the states last year as an individual, shot a match-best 36 over the par 35 WGC course to defeat his Revere counterpart 6-3, while Wallace shot a 37 to cruise to an 8-1 win over his Patriot rival.

Senior Cody Boudrow, playing at No. 3, was a 7-2 winner. Junior Harry Floyd in the No. 4 slot enjoyed the biggest win of the day, 8.5-.5.

Junior Sean McDonald at No. 5 triumphed 6-3 and cousin Brandon McDonald was an 8-1 victor at No. 6. Senior Mike St. Jean halved his match at No. 7, 4.5-4.5, and senior Ryan Duyon won handily in the No. 8 slot, 6.5-2.5.

“It was a nice way to start the season,” said Lyons of his team, which last year finished fourth in the state sectionals and just missing qualifying for the state championships. “Most of the boys played a lot over the summer and it showed.”

Lyons’s squad, which managed only three practices in the short pre-season, will be jumping right into their 2014 campaign. The Vikings were set to travel to Lynn English yesterday (Wednesday) and will host Saugus today. They will entertain Marblehead Tuesday and make the long trek to Gloucester next Thursday.
