Council Takes No Action on Casino

The Town Council voted by a 6-3 margin to table a motion that sought to have a letter sent to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) regarding the Mohegan Sun casino project proposed for the Revere side of the Suffolk Downs property.

At Tuesday night’s Council meeting, the nine councilors were on the verge of voting on a motion by Councilor Craig Mael to send a letter to the MGC expressing the Council’s concerns about developing a Revere-only casino on the site.

But Boncore requested to table the motion until after the City of Revere holds a second referendum vote on the casino proposal.

Boncore pointed out that no discussion is allowed on a motion to table an issue although casino proponents and opponents, including well-known anti-casino leader John Ribeiro of Winthrop, had weighed in earlier on the matter during the public speaking portion of the meeting.

Councillors Nicholas DelVento, Larry Powers, Russell Sanford, Linda Calla, Philip Boncore, and Paul Varone voted in favor of tabling the motion. Council President Peter Gill and Councillors James Letterie and Craig Mael voted against tabling the motion.

The Revere referendum vote is likely to be held in February. Mohegan Sun and Wynn Resorts are competing for the one gaming license in the Greater Boston region.
