Corbett-frank, Turransky Propel Winthrop past Weston 29-26

When you get two rushing performances of the high caliber of those submitted by senior captain Jordan Corbett-Frank and sophomore Reise Turransky, good things happen for football teams.

Corbett-Frank rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns while Turransky matched the team leader with two touchdowns and 75 yards to power Winthrop to a 29-26 victory Weston Friday night at Miller Field.

Corbett Frank, who is closing in on a 1,000-yard season, earned Boston Globe “Football Player of the Week” honors in recognition of his night’s work.

“Our running game was tremendous,” said Winthrop coach Sean Driscoll. “Jordan and Reise had big games and our blocking up front was excellent.”

Winthrop bolted to a 16-0 lead at the half, producing a pair of two-point conversions on well-executed fake kicks. Quarterback and placekick holder Dylan Driscoll rushed for two points and connected on pass with Corbett-Frank for the other conversion.

Weston rallied in the second half, but the Vikings held on firmly for their fourth victory of the season.

“We gave up some big plays in the second half but we were able to get out of it with a win,” said Driscoll. “It was good to get back on the winning track after the last four games.”

Winthrop has a 4-5 record with two games remaining in the season. The Vikings travel to Amesbury Friday (7 p.m.) for a game at historic Landry Stadium.

“Our goal is to win the final two and finish over .500,” said Driscoll. “We were 6-5 the last two years and we’re hoping that we can get there.”

VIKING NOTEBOOK

Dylan Driscoll eclipsed the 100-yard mark on 4-for-9 passing for 65 yards in addition to 60 yards on the ground.

Outside linebacker Justin Casilla drew high marks from coach Sean Driscoll for his effort on defense. Defensive linemen Sean Gillis and Dillon O’Dell also excelled for the Vikings.

Reise Turransky continues to show the improvement that a coaching staff hopes for in a player’s second season at the varsity level. Turransky has speed, is elusive, and knows the game very well. He is a “player to watch” over the next two seasons.

It was “Teacher Appreciation Night” at miller Field with the seniors recognizing WHS faculty before the game.

Marblehead is the lone NEC team standing in the MIAA playoffs. The Magicians have a tough test against Tewksbury in the North Sectional final.
