Brown Inducted into 1,000-point Club

Winthrop Police officer and former Winthrop basketball coach David Brown was enshrined in the St. Mary High School 1,000-point club during a ceremony Saturday at the school’s Tony Conigliaro Gymnasium.

Brown and his family looked on proudly as a banner paying tribute to the ten 1,000-point scorers in school history was unveiled on the wall of the gymnasium where he starred for the Spartans.

Brown scored, 1,267 points in his varsity career at St. Mary’s. He went on to reach the 1,000-point plateau in his career at Westfield State College where he is an inductee in the college’s Hall of Fame.

“It’s a great honor to finally see your name go up on the wall here,” said Brown. “What I take out of going to St. Mary’s was a great family atmosphere. The friendships I made during my high school years I’m still very close with a lot of those kids.”

Brown stepped down as the Winthrop coach following the 2012 season. He guided the Vikings to a state championship in 2011.

He is currently the director of a youth basketball league in Lynn. As a result of his tremendous success in the Winthrop program, Brown is mentioned as a candidate for head coaching positions.

“I’m hoping to get back into coaching someday,” said Brown.
